Planning Your DIY Wedding Florals: What You Need to Know

If you're considering a DIY approach to your wedding flowers, we love that for you! DIY is a great option for couples who want to be hands-on, get creative, and stick to a budget while still enjoying farm-fresh blooms. At Mountain Field Farm, we offer flexible DIY Flower Pulls to support that—but it’s important to know: DIY means you're in charge of the design decisions.

We’re here to supply stunning, seasonal flowers—not custom planning. Our DIY Pulls are best suited for folks who already have a general sense of what they want to create and feel confident making those decisions on their own (or have a flower-savvy friend who’s ready to jump in).

Why DIY Might Be Right for You

  • You love the idea of arranging your own flowers or having a creative friend or family member take the lead.

  • You’re working within a budget but still want beautiful, seasonal blooms.

  • You don’t need help figuring out how many stems or bouquets—you're good to go with some general guidance.

If that sounds like you, let’s break down the general guidelines on how to estimate your floral needs.

How Many Stems Do I Need?

While every event and design style is different, here’s a handy average stem count guide to help you estimate what you might need:

Personal Flowers

  • Bridal Bouquet: 25–35 stems

  • Bridesmaid Bouquet: 15–20 stems

  • Boutonnière: 3–5 stems

  • Corsage: 5–7 stems

  • Flower Crown: 10–15 stems

Centerpieces

  • Small bud vase: 3–5 stems

  • Mason jar / Pint-sized: 8–12 stems

  • Medium centerpiece (5–6" vase): 15–20 stems

  • Lush large centerpiece (6–8" vase): 25–30 stems

Ceremony + Decor

  • Arbor floral spray: Minimum 30–50 stems

  • Full arbor coverage: Minimum 100+ stems

  • Cake Flowers: 5–10 stems

  • Garland accents: 10–15 stems per 6 ft section

These are just estimates. If you want something extra full or a little extra peace of mind, bump up a stem count or two.

Let’s Talk Support (or Lack Thereof)

Our DIY Flower Pulls are all about giving you the freedom to create something uniquely yours. Because this option is designed to be hands-off on our end, it doesn’t include consultations, stem count calculations, or design guidance.

We’ll provide the freshest seasonal blooms and a beautiful, cohesive palette—you bring your creativity and vision to life (or hand it off to a flower-loving friend). Our time is devoted to growing and preparing these blooms with care, and that’s where we stay focused. If you’d prefer a little more guidance, inquire about our À La Carte or Full-Service Design options. We also want to gently remind you that specific flower types are not guaranteed. We harvest what's in bloom at the time of your event, aiming to match your desired color palette as closely as nature allows.

Flower Care & Timing

To get the best results from your blooms, we recommend picking up your flowers 1 to 2 days before your event. This allows you time to hydrate, condition, and arrange them while keeping them at their freshest.

Basic care tips:

  • Keep flowers in clean buckets with fresh, cool water.

  • Store them in a cool, shaded space—away from direct sun, wind, or heat.

  • Remove any foliage that will sit below the water line.

  • Give stems a fresh angled cut before placing in water.

Please note: you are responsible for the care, storage, and handling of your flowers once they leave the farm. DIY means taking full ownership of timing and prep to ensure your flowers look their best on the big day.

DIY can be incredibly rewarding, and it’s a beautiful way to bring your own style to your wedding day. Just make sure you’re up for the challenge—and ready to take the lead.

We’re here with the flowers. You’ve got the rest.
